Kuala Lumpur, February 8: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to Malaysia. During his trip, he held a delegation-level meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, followed by a joint press conference addressing the media.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that Malaysia is the second-largest country with an Indian-origin population. He noted the cultural heritage and democratic values shared by both nations. Modi expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and mentioned that this visit marks his first international trip in 2026.
He emphasized that the relationship between India and Malaysia has gained new momentum and depth in recent years. Cooperation has strengthened in areas such as energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, digital economy, biotechnology, IT, tourism, and people-to-people connections.
Modi stated that security cooperation, counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and maritime security will see increased collaboration between the two countries. Additionally, partnerships in AI, digital technology, semiconductors, health, and food security will be further enhanced.
The Prime Minister noted that new business and investment opportunities have emerged through the CEO Forum, which will accelerate economic transformation based on strategic trust between India and Malaysia.
He also recalled his meeting with the Indian diaspora, stating that nearly 3 million Indian expatriates serve as a “living bridge” between India and Malaysia. Modi mentioned initiatives such as a social security agreement, free e-visas, and UPI digital payments that will ease the lives of citizens from both countries.
Furthermore, he indicated that opportunities for university exchanges, startup connections, and skill development among youth are being expanded. To support the growing relationship, a new consulate will be established in Malaysia. Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to development, peace, and stability across the Indo-Pacific region, prioritizing ASEAN centrality.
He emphasized the Tamil community and its culture in Malaysia, highlighting the significant and vibrant contribution of the Tamil language in education, media, and cultural sectors. Modi discussed efforts to bring people closer through film and music, particularly Tamil cinema, under the audiovisual agreement.
The Prime Minister reiterated that India and Malaysia are committed to development, peace, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and called for a swift review of the ASEAN-India Trade Agreement (AITIG).
In the context of global instability, Modi stressed that the growing friendship between India and Malaysia is crucial for both nations. He affirmed continued support for all peace efforts and made it clear that there would be no double standards or compromises in the fight against terrorism.
He concluded by stating that the relationship between the two countries is strong on both strategic and humanitarian grounds. Modi thanked his Malaysian counterpart for the hospitality and expressed eagerness to welcome him to India.
