Shillong, February 6: In a decisive move against illegal coal mining in Meghalaya, the High Court has ordered immediate arrests following a deadly explosion at an alleged illegal mining site in East Jaintia Hills. The blast claimed the lives of 18 individuals, as reported by officials on Friday.
A division bench comprising Justice H.S. Thangkhiew and Justice W. Dingdoah took suo motu cognizance of media reports regarding the explosion in the Thangskhu area. The court expressed serious concern that illegal coal mining activities continue in the district despite a fatal incident on January 14, indicating a blatant disregard for mining restrictions and court directives.
The bench instructed the district administration and police to take prompt action. The court mandated the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills to identify and arrest all individuals involved in the mining operations.
Additionally, officials were directed to seize all equipment, documents, and other incriminating materials related to the mining activities. Emphasizing the need for immediate relief measures, the High Court ordered the district administration to ensure that all affected individuals, including the injured, receive prompt medical assistance and necessary support wherever possible.
Furthermore, the bench summoned the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills to appear in court on February 9.
They are required to present a comprehensive report detailing the actions taken so far, including arrests made, items seized, and measures implemented to prevent the continuation of illegal coal mining in the district.
The court also sought clarification from officials on how such prohibited activities were allowed to persist despite previous incidents and existing legal restrictions.
The Chief Minister stated that the Meghalaya government has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and made it clear that accountability will be enforced, with strict legal action against those responsible. He emphasized that there will be no leniency in matters concerning public safety and that the state will not compromise on the protection of human lives.
He assured that the administration would take all necessary legal and administrative steps based on the investigation’s findings. The recent blast in a suspected illegal coal mine in the Thangskhu area of East Jaintia Hills is one of the most dangerous mining accidents in recent years, resulting in the recovery of at least 18 workers’ bodies.
