Major Currency Seizure at Chennai Airport by CISF

Chennai, February 9: The vigilant team of the CISF at Chennai International Airport has made a significant move by seizing undeclared Indian currency.

During the pre-embarkation security check (PESC) for a flight to Varanasi on February 7, 2026, CISF personnel discovered a total of ₹55.9 lakh in cash hidden in the hand baggage of three passengers. This amount was not declared by the travelers, violating regulations.

CISF officers monitored suspicious passengers through alert profiling, professional vigilance, and efficient screening. The substantial cash was uncovered during the screening process. The Income Tax Department was immediately informed about the incident. In coordination with relevant agencies, the three passengers were handed over to Income Tax officials for further investigation and necessary legal action concerning the seized cash.

This incident underscores the CISF’s commitment to maintaining security at the airport and monitoring illegal activities. The CISF acted with professionalism, integrity, and dedication in executing their duties. Carrying or transporting undeclared Indian currency is a punishable offense under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and other regulations.

Furthermore, the CISF has clarified that it will not compromise on airport security and is fully prepared to thwart any such attempts. This success not only ensures the safety of passengers but also strengthens the country’s economic security.

Officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken if necessary. Recent months have seen several such operations at Chennai Airport, demonstrating that security forces are alert and will not tolerate any disruptions.
