Uttar Pradesh Launches Initiative for Sustainable Cattle Feed Production

Lucknow, February 8: The Uttar Pradesh government is set to launch a new initiative aimed at making the state’s cow shelters self-sufficient while ensuring the protection of cattle. Under this plan, approximately 7,500 cow shelters will be developed into cattle food security hubs.

As part of the initiative, large-scale production of green fodder will be undertaken in and around these shelters. Shyam Bihari Gupta, Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Cow Service Commission, stated that this statewide program, named “Mission Fodder,” aims to provide sustainable fodder to cow shelters and connect farmers with fodder production.

Each cow shelter will be linked to a network of 50 to 100 farmers, creating an organized system for fodder production and supply. The initiative will utilize the available land in cow shelters to plant moringa (drumstick) and Napier grass. Additionally, seasonal fodder such as sugarcane grass, subabul, dhaincha, as well as lobia, maize, jowar, bajra, and berseem will also be cultivated.

The climate in the state allows for the cultivation of about 50 types of animal fodder. According to the Cow Service Commission, moringa plants can provide green fodder for 12 to 15 years, while Napier grass can do so for 7 to 8 years. The goal of the initiative is to ensure that the protected cattle in these shelters receive an adequate supply of green fodder daily.

The chairman highlighted that green fodder is more beneficial for the nutrition and health of cattle. This is expected to improve milk production and reduce operational costs for the shelters. Increased self-sufficiency in fodder production will also decrease reliance on external sources.

He noted that this action plan, prepared under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, prioritizes cattle protection, nutritional security, natural farming, and environmental balance. Mission Fodder is expected to enhance green cover, improve soil fertility, and create employment opportunities in rural areas. Following the state’s directives, the Uttar Pradesh Cow Service Commission will implement this plan in phases.
