New Delhi, February 9: A tragic incident occurred in the Dwarka area of Delhi, where a bus caught fire, resulting in the death of a helper named Sunil. The victim, identified as 25-year-old Sunil, was reportedly asleep inside the bus at the time of the blaze. Initial reports suggest that Sunil lit incense sticks to ward off mosquitoes, which may have ignited the fire that rapidly spread throughout the vehicle.
An official stated that the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received notification of the fire early Monday morning. Fire engines were dispatched immediately to extinguish the flames. The incident came to light when nearby residents noticed thick smoke and flames emanating from the bus. A video circulating on social media showed the bus engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading quickly.
Due to the intensity of the fire, Sunil allegedly had no chance to escape and became trapped inside. Local residents promptly alerted the police and fire brigade. Firefighters arrived on the scene and, after considerable effort, managed to bring the fire under control. Once the flames were extinguished, Sunil’s charred body was discovered inside the bus. The remains were recovered and sent to a hospital for autopsy.
Authorities reported that the bus involved was a private vehicle registered in Haryana. It was reportedly a new bus that had only been on the road for 28 days.
Officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. The police are examining whether the blaze was solely due to the incense sticks or if there were other technical malfunctions, including potential electrical short circuits or fuel-related issues.
Earlier, on February 6, a fire broke out in a ground managed by NDMC near Safdarjung Airport, as reported by the Delhi Fire Service.
In another tragic incident related to fire, on January 7, a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) employee, his wife, and their nine-year-old daughter perished in a fire at a DMRC-allotted flat in Mukundpur, northwest Delhi. The victims were identified as Ajay Vimal (44), an assistant section engineer stationed at Barakhamba Metro Station, his wife Neelam Vimal (43), and their daughter Jahnvi. Ajay had joined DMRC in 2006 and moved into the Mukundpur flat in 2016.
