Tragic Death of Young Man in Delhi Due to Open Pit Accident

New Delhi, February 6: A heartbreaking incident has emerged from the Janakpuri area of Delhi, where a young man tragically lost his life after falling into a deep pit left uncovered on the street. The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Kamal, a resident of Kailashpuri.

Kamal’s mother, Shanti, shared her grief in an interview, stating, “He didn’t mention anything about work. He said he was coming home from the District Center. He called me at 12 PM to say he was on his way home. When he didn’t arrive, I tried calling him, but he didn’t answer.”

Kamal’s brother, Mayank, described him as his younger sibling who was returning home from his shift in Rohini and was headed to Palam. “Everything was fine until Janakpuri. The accident happened there. It was a large pit created by the Delhi Jal Board, and he fell into it. There were no barricades, no warnings, and no safety measures in place. There were no instructions for the public,” he said.

Mayank accused the authorities of negligence, stating, “It is their responsibility to ensure that work is not left incomplete. Kamal was in contact until 11 PM. After that, when we lost touch, we feared the worst. We searched for him extensively, but he was nowhere to be found.”

In response to the incident, Delhi government minister Pravesh Verma took notice of the situation. He posted on the social media platform X, stating that he visited the accident site where sewer line work was ongoing. “I am deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and my condolences are with the victim’s family. The Executive Engineer has been suspended immediately, and strict action is being taken against the responsible agency. The Delhi Jal Board has formed a high-level inquiry committee to determine accountability. This unfortunate incident at the Janakpuri line rehabilitation project site is being taken very seriously. The committee has been instructed to inspect the accident site immediately, review safety arrangements, barricading, signage, and traffic management, and ensure compliance with all safety regulations. Wherever negligence is found, accountability will be established. Strict corrective and disciplinary actions will be recommended, and a detailed report is expected by evening. There will be no compromise on citizen safety, and accountability will be enforced to prevent such incidents from occurring again.”
