New Delhi, February 7: The tragic death of 25-year-old biker Kamal Dhyani, who fell into an open pit in the Janakpuri area, has left his family devastated and furious. Kamal’s father, Naresh Dhyani, expressed his anger towards the Delhi government, demanding not just temporary fixes but permanent solutions to prevent such incidents in the future.
In an interview, Naresh Dhyani stated, “We are not at all satisfied with the government. They occasionally make temporary repairs, but the situation returns to the same within days. Nothing has been done this time either. What has happened is done, but the government must take responsibility to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
On the night of the incident, Kamal’s family and friends searched for him throughout the night, only to learn in the morning about the horrific event. Naresh recounted, “We searched parks and nearby areas with his friends. It was only in the morning that we found out he had fallen into the pit with his bike in the dark. We want to ensure that no other family has to go through this.”
Kamal was the eldest son and the sole breadwinner of the family. His father explained, “He supported the entire family. My younger son is not working yet. Now, we face a significant crisis for our livelihood.”
Kamal’s younger brother also shared his experience from that night. He said, “I searched for my brother all night. When I called him in the morning, the police informed us that a body and a bike were found in an open pit. When I arrived and saw his bag, I realized it was my brother who had died.”
The family claims that no leader or official has reached out to them since the incident. Kamal’s brother added, “We have not received any information. No leader has come to meet us, nor has any official contacted us.”
Local residents are also expressing deep concerns about safety in the area. One resident mentioned, “Our home is in front of the public flats. We have to pass by here three to four times a day. There were no barricades on this side, only two on the other side. The green sheet you see now wasn’t there before. There were no warnings or proper arrangements. The biggest issue is the lack of lighting; the area remains completely dark.”
The accident occurred late Thursday night when Kamal fell into an open pit at a DJB project site while returning home from work. A resident of Kailashpur, he was heading home to celebrate his parents’ wedding anniversary, but the family’s celebration turned into mourning.
According to a friend, Kamal had spoken to him shortly before the accident. The friend recalled, “Kamal said he was just 15 minutes away from home. But when he didn’t arrive on time, the family began searching for him with police assistance throughout the night.”
The police attempted to locate Kamal using mobile tower data and CCTV footage, but they had no success for several hours. Finally, around 8 AM on Friday, a woman informed the police about a body found in a pit in the area.
Upon arrival, the police recovered Kamal’s body from a pit approximately 15 feet deep, with his motorcycle nearby. Local residents alleged that the DJB had been grossly negligent, leaving the pit open without proper barricading or warning signs, making it deadly for nighttime travelers.
Residents also pointed out that the lack of adequate lighting on the road made it impossible for bikers or other drivers to see the pit.
However, Delhi police dismissed the negligence allegations, stating that they had remained with the family throughout the night and were actively searching for Kamal.
Delhi’s Public Works Department Minister Pravesh Verma described the death as tragic and announced strict action. He stated that those responsible would be suspended, and a thorough investigation would be conducted to hold the guilty accountable.
