Shillong, February 5: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma confirmed on Thursday that at least 18 bodies have been recovered from the site of an illegal coal mine collapse in Thangsko, located in the coal-rich East Jaintia Hills district. The search and rescue operation is ongoing.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma explained that the incident occurred this morning when a powerful dynamite explosion caused the illegal mine to cave in, trapping several workers inside. Reports indicate that the explosion happened around 11:30 AM during mining activities.
The Chief Minister has directed two ministers to visit the accident site to assess the situation and coordinate relief and rescue efforts. This location is situated in a remote area, approximately three hours from the district headquarters, Khliehriat.
Sangma stated that he is personally monitoring the situation and is in constant contact with district officials. The Deputy Chief Minister in charge of the Home (Police) Department is also coordinating with the administration to ensure the rescue operation runs smoothly.
He emphasized that the search and rescue operation is ongoing and an investigation has been initiated. The state government is taking this incident very seriously.
Disaster response teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been deployed to assist local authorities. The operation is being conducted under challenging conditions due to unstable terrain and safety concerns.
Earlier, the Chief Minister stated that the Meghalaya government has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and made it clear that those responsible will be held accountable.
He reiterated that the state government will impose strict legal action against the culprits and emphasized that there will be no leniency in matters concerning public safety. The protection of human life is a priority for the state.
