Tragic Coal Mine Accident in Meghalaya Claims Lives

New Delhi, February 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the recent coal mine accident in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. He announced a special ex-gratia payment from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of the deceased.

In a statement on social media platform ‘X’, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his condolences to those who lost loved ones and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. He wrote, “I am saddened by the accident in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. My sympathies are with those who have lost their loved ones. I wish a quick recovery to the injured.”

The Prime Minister also declared financial assistance for the affected families. Each family of the deceased will receive ₹2 lakh, while those injured in the accident will be granted ₹50,000.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma responded to the incident by stating that the state government has ordered a thorough investigation into the accident and assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible.

He emphasized, “The Meghalaya government has ordered a comprehensive investigation into this incident. Accountability will be established, and stringent legal action will be taken against those found guilty.”

The Chief Minister clarified that there will be no leniency in matters of public safety, and the state will not compromise on the protection of human life. He mentioned that the administration will take all necessary legal and administrative measures based on the investigation’s findings. Chief Minister Sangma stated, “During this time of grief, the state stands united with all those affected.”

According to police officials, this is one of the deadliest mining accidents in recent years. Following a major explosion at an alleged illegal coal mine in the Thangskhu area, at least 16 workers’ bodies have been recovered so far.

East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar reported, “So far, 16 bodies have been recovered.” He added that the search and rescue operation is still ongoing.

Officials noted that the central government will provide this ex-gratia payment as immediate assistance to the victims. Rescue and investigation efforts at the site are continuing.
