Indian Shooters Shine at Asian Championship, Winning Multiple Golds

New Delhi, February 7: Olympian Elavenil Valarivan clinched the gold medal in the women’s 10-meter air rifle event, narrowly defeating Japan’s Misaki Nobata. Meanwhile, Shambhavi Kshirsagar set a new record in the Asian Junior finals, securing gold in the junior category of the 2026 Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship.

The championship, held at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi, also saw Meghna Sajjanar win a bronze medal, contributing to India’s clean sweep in the junior women’s medals alongside Manvitha Singh and Anisha Sharma.

India continued its dominance on the fourth day of the championship, winning 10 Gold Medals, bringing the total medal count to 43, which includes 27 gold, 10 silver, and 8 bronze. Ojasvi Thakur also added a gold medal in the women’s youth category.

The day began with a strong performance in the men’s 50-meter pistol event. Former world number one in the 10-meter air pistol, Saurabh Chaudhary, secured the gold medal. He was followed by Kamaljeet Chaudhary and current world champion Ravinder Singh, who won silver and bronze, respectively. Additionally, Yogesh Kumar claimed gold in the junior category.

Elavenil started in fifth place after two series but gradually took the lead by the 18th shot. She maintained her composure to secure the top position, with Nobata and Meghna closely trailing behind. Arya Borse missed out on a medal after scoring a low 9.8, but she rebounded with two shots of 10.2.

Nobata finished the final with two consecutive scores of 10.8, while Elavenil averaged 10.6 in the elimination phase, achieving 10 precise hits, including one at 10.9. The Indian team collectively won gold with a score of 1892.6.

In the junior finals, Shambhavi set a new Asian junior record with a score of 253.7, surpassing Esha Anil Taksale’s previous record of 253.1 from 2024. She started strong and maintained her lead, finishing four points ahead of Manvitha Singh, who scored 249.7 for silver. Anisha Sharma secured silver with a final score of 227.5.

Shambhavi, Anisha, and Sandrata Roy combined for a team gold with a total score of 1884.2. Ojasvi also teamed up with Anvi Vikram Rathore and Hridya Sri Kondur to win gold in the team event with a score of 1890.6.
