Amaravati, February 9: Ambati Rambabu, a former minister and senior leader of the YSR Congress Party in Andhra Pradesh, has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody in a fresh case. He is already in custody for making allegedly derogatory remarks against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
A special judicial magistrate in Guntur ordered Rambabu’s custody until February 22 in connection with a case filed in November 2025. This case involves allegations of threatening police officers and obstructing their duties.
On Monday, Rambabu was brought from Rajahmundry Central Jail to appear before the special judicial magistrate in Guntur. After hearing arguments on the custody petition, the court decided to place him in judicial custody for 14 days.
According to police, on November 12, 2025, a case was registered against Rambabu and his supporters for holding a rally without permission, illegal assembly, and threatening on-duty police officers. Allegations state that Rambabu and his supporters conducted the rally without police authorization. When law enforcement attempted to intervene, protesters allegedly threatened the officers. The police reported that the rally caused traffic disruptions and inconvenienced the public.
The case has been registered at the Pattabhipuram police station under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to assaulting public servants, using criminal force, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation, and unlawful assembly.
Police noted that similar cases have previously been filed against Rambabu during various movements called by the YSR Congress Party.
It is noteworthy that Rambabu was arrested on January 31 for allegedly making derogatory statements against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Guntur district. His arrest involved several hours of high-drama at his residence.
During this incident, leaders and activists of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) vandalized his home and vehicles in protest against his statements.
Rambabu is also accused of obstructing on-duty police officers and being involved in a dispute related to the removal of TDP banners. According to police, he has been named under IPC sections 126(2) and 132 for preventing public servants from performing their duties.
Additionally, another case has been filed against him under IPC sections 126(2), 196(1), 352, 351(2), 292, and section 3(5) for alleged threats, abusive language, and derogatory remarks.
The following day, police presented the YSR Congress leader in a local court, where he was remanded to judicial custody before being transferred to Rajahmundry Central Jail.
