Mumbai, February 25: Some films remain timeless, captivating audiences no matter how many times they are watched. One such blockbuster is ‘Tanu Weds Manu,’ where Kangana Ranaut‘s quirky charm and R. Madhavan‘s innocence won the hearts of fans.
Today marks the 15th anniversary of the film’s release, yet many are unaware that it grossed double its budget, while its sequel shattered box office records.
Released on February 25, 2011, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ tells the story of Manu, a simple man searching for a bride, who encounters Tanu, a woman in love with someone else but unable to marry. The film’s engaging narrative, combined with Kangana’s boldness and Madhavan’s simplicity, provided endless ENTERTAINMENT. The songs ‘Saddi Gali,’ ‘Ae Rangrez Mere,’ and ‘Jugni’ became party anthems, especially ‘Saddi Gali,’ which featured Kangana’s electrifying dance performance.
The film received immense love at the box office. Directed by Aanand L. Rai, it was made on a budget of 15-20 crores but earned between 50-55 crores post-release. The success extended beyond box office numbers; Kangana’s outfits, from the striking red Banarasi suit in ‘Saddi Gali’ to the off-white saree with broad borders in ‘Jugni,’ became fashion trends.
Interestingly, Kangana was not the first choice for the role. The film was initially offered to Chitrangada Singh, who declined due to other commitments. In interviews, she expressed regret over underestimating a film like ‘Tanu Weds Manu.’
Following the success of ‘Tanu Weds Manu,’ the makers released a sequel, ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns,’ which grossed four times its budget of approximately 40 crores, raking in around 260 crores. An official announcement has been made for ‘Tanu Weds Manu 3,’ which is set to hit the screens soon.
