Kochi, February 7: The Kerala High Court was informed on Friday that a body recently recovered from Kalamassery belongs to Suraj Lama. Suraj Lama was an Indian citizen who arrived at Kochi Airport after being deported from Kuwait and subsequently went missing.
The court was told that DNA reports confirmed the identity of the body found by a special investigation team in the proposed judicial city area of Kalamassery.
During the hearing of a habeas corpus petition filed by Lama’s son, a division bench comprising Justice Devan Ramachandran and Justice M.B. Snehaltha directed the Nedumbassery police station’s SHO to submit the complete case file and post-mortem report by Monday.
This petition was filed with the assistance of the Kerala legal services Authority. Suraj Lama had been deported from Kuwait and sent to Kochi under a government order.
Reports indicate that he was in a visibly weakened state and possibly suffered from mental and other impairments. Despite this, immigration and airport officials allowed him to leave the airport without any assistance.
A missing person‘s complaint was lodged on October 8, 2025.
Witnesses reported seeing him afterward, but his whereabouts remained unknown. The police later found him wandering and sent him to Kalamassery Medical College Hospital, where doctors found no issues and discharged him.
The High Court had previously formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and warned of serious negligence in the cases of deportation and missing persons, stating that proper adherence to regulations could have saved Lama’s life.
The court instructed the superintendent of Ernakulam Medical College, Kalamassery, to hand over the body to the family and expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offering apologies to the family.
In a conversation with the media, Lama’s son, who is pursuing the case with his mother, expressed that this incident is profoundly tragic for Kerala.
He stated, “Now everything is over,” conveying deep grief over his father’s passing.
