Afghanistan Falls Short Against New Zealand in T20 World Cup Opener

Chennai, February 8: Afghanistan faced a disappointing defeat against New Zealand in their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2026. Despite a promising start, captain Rashid Khan expressed his frustration over the loss, attributing it to their bowling performance.

During the post-match presentation, Rashid stated, “A score of 182 was decent, but we did not bowl in the right areas. This allowed the opposition to score too many runs. Had we bowled for wickets and maintained good length, it would have been more challenging for them. We learned a lot about our bowling in this match. We have some plans, but executing them during the game is crucial.”

Rashid praised all-rounder Gulabdin Naib for demonstrating the right intent in scoring. He emphasized the need for improvement in certain areas of their game, particularly in the opening batting. “How we play the first six overs is very important,” he added.

In terms of the match, Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat, finishing with a total of 182 runs for the loss of six wickets. Gulabdin Naib scored a remarkable 63 runs off 35 balls, hitting four sixes and three fours. Rahmanullah Gurbaz contributed 27 runs off 22 balls, while Sediqullah Atal scored 29 runs off 24 balls. Darves Rasooli, Azmatullah, and Nabi added 20, 14, and 10 runs, respectively.

New Zealand successfully chased down the target, reaching 183 runs for the loss of five wickets in just 17.5 overs, aided by Tim Seifert’s half-century. Seifert scored 65 runs off 42 balls, including three sixes and seven fours. Glenn Phillips also played a crucial role, scoring 42 runs off 25 balls. The pair’s 74-run partnership for the third wicket paved the way for New Zealand’s victory. Seifert was named Player of the Match.
