
Ranchi, February 8: A shocking murder has occurred in the Sonahatu police station area of Ranchi district, where a 25-year-old man was brutally killed. Police discovered the victim’s severed head and torso along the banks of the Kanchi River on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Harihar Mahto.
According to police reports, the body was found near the Kanchi River, in front of the Edarmahatu-Marchadih village. Initial investigations revealed that the victim’s private parts had also been mutilated.
Family members reported that Harihar Mahto had been in a romantic relationship with a woman from the village. Allegedly, it was this woman who had called him to meet. On the evening of January 31, 2026, around 6:30 PM, Harihar left home but did not return. His family searched extensively for him but found no leads.
After three days without any information, the family filed a missing person report at the Sonahatu police station on February 3, 2026. Following this, police launched an investigation and intensified their search based on technical evidence. This led to the discovery of his body along the Kanchi River on Sunday.
Reports indicate that Harihar Mahto had married two years ago and had a one-month-old son. The entire village is in mourning, and his family is devastated.
Prem Pradeep, the officer in charge of the Sonahatu police station, stated that the seriousness of the case warrants a thorough investigation from all angles. Further actions will be based on the post-mortem report and call detail records. Police have detained a couple suspected of involvement in the murder and are currently questioning them. Authorities claim that they will soon reveal more details about the case.
