Chennai, February 8: Afghanistan’s bowling attack is regarded as one of the best in the world, particularly its spin bowling. On a spin-friendly pitch, Afghanistan has the potential to defeat any major team. However, in their recent T20 World Cup 2026 match against New Zealand at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, the Afghan spinners disappointed, leading to a loss despite a strong start. This defeat also marked the end of a significant record for Afghanistan.
Before this match, Afghanistan had successfully chased down scores of 180 or more in T20s 25 times when batting first, winning each time. However, against New Zealand, that winning streak was broken. Afghanistan scored 182 runs but still faced defeat. This was the first time in 26 instances that Afghanistan lost after scoring over 180 runs.
In the match, Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first, with Gulbadin Naib scoring 63 runs, helping the team reach 182. Afghanistan started their bowling impressively, with spinner Mujeeb taking two wickets in consecutive balls in the second over. Unfortunately, the Afghan spinners could not perform to their usual standards, resulting in the team’s loss. New Zealand, led by opener Tim Seifert’s 65 runs, chased down the target in just 17.5 overs, winning the match by five wickets.
