Kolkata, February 8: Kolkata police have detained three additional individuals in connection with a violent clash between two groups in the Golpark area on Sunday. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to 23.
Local residents have expressed concerns that the main suspect, Biswajit Poddar, also known as Sona Pappu, remains at large. Many are questioning why he has not yet been apprehended.
On Saturday night, officers from the Rabindra Sarovar police station arrested three young men: Sougat Basu, Mintu Bhhanja, and Prabir Pramanik. Sougat and Mintu are residents of the Kasba area, while Prabir lives in the Rabindra Sarovar locality of South Kolkata.
According to police, investigations revealed that these three were involved in the incident that occurred on the night of February 1. Authorities are now interrogating the arrested suspects to determine the whereabouts of Sona Pappu, who has been underground since the incident.
The violent clash took place last Sunday on Kakulia Road in Golpark, under the jurisdiction of the Rabindra Sarovar police station. Following the incident, local reactions frequently mentioned Pappu and his gang, with some residents alleging that they are responsible for the unrest.
In the meantime, three FIRs have been filed at the Rabindra Sarovar police station, including one registered under suo motu for an attack on a police vehicle.
According to local sources and police reports, the conflict began around 8:30 PM last week near Panchanantala during a club picnic, escalating into violence. The clash reportedly involved a group led by local businessman Bapi Haldar and Sona Pappu’s gang. Residents claim that Pappu’s gang is attempting to assert control over the area, targeting Bapi in the process.
Witnesses allege that approximately 100 to 150 assailants attacked the locality, with reports of gunfire and homemade bombs being thrown. Sharp weapons were also reportedly used during the confrontation.
During the chaos, police vehicles and local motorcycles were vandalized, and bricks were thrown between the groups. That same night, police recovered bullet casings and bomb fragments from the scene.
