New Delhi, February 4: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken note of serious allegations regarding the exploitation of young women and forced conversions under the guise of gyms and fitness centers in Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh. The commission has deemed this a potential violation of human rights and has requested a report from the relevant authorities.
The complaint alleges that an organized gang was targeting young women through these fitness establishments in Mirzapur. Media reports indicate that over 50 women may have been ensnared in this scheme, with the involvement of a police officer also coming to light. This raises significant concerns about the misuse of governmental authority and public safety.
According to the commission, the alleged role of the police officer not only jeopardizes the safety of women but also undermines religious freedom and public trust. The complainant has called for an independent and impartial investigation, the protection and rehabilitation of victims, strict action against the culpable police personnel, and the establishment of stringent regulations for gyms and fitness centers.
Priyank Kanungo, a member of the NHRC bench, has initiated action under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The commission has requested reports from the Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories regarding the regulations, registration processes, and standards applicable to gyms and fitness centers in their jurisdictions.
Additionally, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, along with the Sports Authority of India, has been asked to provide information on existing guidelines and licensing arrangements related to gyms and fitness centers.
The NHRC has also directed the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police in Mirzapur to investigate the matter and submit a detailed report within two weeks. All relevant officials have been instructed to send action reports to the commission.
The NHRC clarified that further action will be determined after receiving the reports.
