Beijing, February 8: From February 1 to 7, Uruguay’s President Yamandu Orsi embarked on a state visit to China, capturing the attention of international media. He is the first South American leader to visit China this year.
Notably, Uruguay holds the rotating presidency of a group comprising 77 countries, as well as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and Mercosur this year. Therefore, the significance of Orsi’s visit extends beyond bilateral relations.
During his trip, President Xi Jinping engaged in discussions with him. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership, emphasizing mutual respect, reciprocal benefits, and the establishment of strong political trust based on friendship.
In Beijing, Orsi visited the CPC History Museum, the Great Wall, and the Forbidden City, and interacted with Chinese students. He also toured Shanghai, China’s economic hub.
Orsi led the largest delegation in Uruguay’s history, which included several prominent business figures. This indicates their strong emphasis on enhancing economic and trade cooperation with China.
Currently, China is Uruguay’s largest export market and its primary source of imports. During the visit, both sides signed 19 cooperative agreements in areas such as trade and investment, showcasing the vitality of their collaboration.
Analysts believe that the friendly exchanges between China and Uruguay reflect the broader relationship between China and Latin America, as well as the solidarity and cooperation among Global South countries. The world is currently entering a new phase of change, with rising unilateralism and protectionism. In this context, it is essential for Global South nations to strengthen their unity to achieve equitable development and foster greater stability and certainty globally.
