Understanding Your Tongue: Health Indicators and Remedies

New Delhi, February 7: The tongue is an essential part of our body, serving not only to detect taste but also to indicate underlying Health issues. Changes in tongue color can signal conditions ranging from fever to digestive problems. This is why doctors always examine the tongue during check-ups. If you wake up to find a white or yellow coating on your tongue, it may indicate an increase in ‘ama’ in your body.

In Ayurveda, ama is considered highly detrimental. It accumulates when toxic substances build up inside the body instead of being expelled. This accumulation can slow down metabolism, leading to food fermentation in the stomach, resulting in pain, constipation, gas, and other gastrointestinal issues. The effects are visible on the tongue and mouth. Moreover, ama can gradually contaminate the blood, laying the groundwork for serious diseases like arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease.

A white or yellow coating on the tongue signifies the presence of ama. Ayurveda offers several remedies to combat this, starting with intermittent fasting. Fasting for 14-16 hours daily is beneficial for the stomach and digestive system. Ideally, finish your last meal between 6 and 7 PM and have your first meal the next day between 10 and 11 AM. During fasting, you can consume liquids if you feel hungry, allowing the stomach ample time to cleanse itself.

Another remedy involves making a decoction of equal parts cumin, coriander, and fennel. Boil these three ingredients in water and sip the decoction throughout the day. This mixture helps clear internal blockages and expel toxins. The third remedy is the Agnisar Kriya, considered one of the most powerful yoga practices. This technique involves pumping the abdomen inward and is performed on an empty stomach, gradually helping to eliminate accumulated ama.

Now, what should you avoid? It is advisable to drink warm water throughout the day. Cold water can contribute to toxin buildup and worsen constipation. Warm water is an excellent choice for alleviating constipation and digestive issues.
