New Delhi, February 19: India has been home to artists who have left an indelible mark with their craft. One such magician is Ram V. Sutar, known for his chiseling stones into lifelike sculptures of great personalities. His birthday is celebrated on February 19.
Born on February 19, 1925, in a poor family in Gundur village, Dhule district, Maharashtra, Ram Sutar immortalized India’s history, culture, and unity through his artistry. His extraordinary talent was first recognized by his mentor, Ramkrishna Joshi, who encouraged him to enroll in the Sir JJ School of Art in Mumbai.
Despite facing numerous challenges in his childhood, Ram Sutar consistently excelled in his studies, earning a gold medal in his final year. In the 1950s, he took on the responsibility of preserving and restoring ancient artifacts for the Archaeological Survey of India at the Ellora and Ajanta caves. Many of his sculptures are now installed across the country, depicting the vibrant images of freedom fighters, national leaders, social reformers, and historical figures.
What set Ram Sutar’s art apart was his ability to convey not just grand forms but also the emotions, sparkle in the eyes, posture, and life philosophies of the subjects in stone or bronze. His sculptures seem to come alive, speaking to those who behold them.
Among his notable works is the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue at 182 meters, located in Kevadia, Gujarat, symbolizing India’s unity and resolve. He also sculpted a meditative statue of Mahatma Gandhi and a grand statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on horseback, along with a 21-foot bronze statue at various locations. Memorial statues of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Swami Vivekananda, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, V.D. Savarkar, and other leaders can be found in different states.
In recognition of his contributions, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016. The Maharashtra government also honored him with the Maharashtra Bhushan Award. He remained active until his final days, inspiring young artists.
