The Importance of Balanced Sleep in Daily Life

New Delhi, February 9: In today’s fast-paced world, some people stay up late while others oversleep. However, few realize the critical importance of maintaining a proper balance between sleep and wakefulness. According to Unani medicine, this balance is considered one of the fundamental principles of a healthy life. Disruption of this balance can lead to various Health issues.

Unani medicine posits that sleep is not merely a time for rest; it is crucial for the body’s repair processes. During sleep, the body’s internal strength, known as “Rooh-e-Hayati” in Unani, remains intact and works to mend damaged parts of the body.

This period allows for balanced digestion, mental relaxation, and the generation of new energy. Insufficient sleep can weaken the body, increase irritability, and impair cognitive functions.

Conversely, excessive wakefulness is also deemed harmful according to Unani principles. Staying up late or working continuously can lead to increased heat and dryness in the body. This affects the brain, eyes, and nerves first, resulting in headaches, irritation, restlessness, dry mouth, and fatigue. Prolonged wakefulness can deplete the body’s moisture, leading to weakness and premature aging.

Unani medicine also warns that oversleeping can be detrimental. Excessive sleep can increase coldness and humidity in the body, causing sluggishness, weakened digestion, and lethargy. Individuals who sleep too much often face issues like obesity, heaviness, gas, cough, and lack of focus.

To maintain good health, Unani medicine recommends that the amount of sleep should be tailored to an individual’s temperament and age. Children require more sleep, while the elderly need less. Similarly, those with a hot temperament should aim for balanced and light sleep, while those with a cold temperament should be cautious not to oversleep. The best sleep is considered to be that which occurs at night, allowing one to wake up refreshed in the morning.
