Mumbai, March 3: The festival of colors, Holi, brings excitement not only to the general public but also to numerous stars in the film industry. This year, however, audiences were left disappointed as no films were released during the Holi festivities. This is not always the case; in the past, several films have premiered during this vibrant occasion, with mixed results at the box office.
From patriotic films like ‘Kesari’ to romantic dramas such as ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania,’ these movies have showcased the magic of Holi in various ways.
The romantic-comedy ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar,’ directed by Luv Ranjan and released in 2023, stars Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. It received positive feedback from both audiences and critics. Its release on Holi significantly boosted its performance, making it a hit.
On the other hand, ‘Bachchan Pandey,’ an action-comedy featuring Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon, and Jacqueline Fernandez, failed to impress despite extensive promotion. Released in 2022, it did not resonate with viewers and was deemed a flop. Arshad Warsi also played a key role in the film.
‘Saina,’ a sports biopic starring Parineeti Chopra, was released during Holi in 2021 but did not make a significant impact at the box office, resulting in poor collections in India.
‘Irrfan Khan’s ‘Angrezi Medium,’ featuring Kareena Kapoor and Radhika Madan, was released in 2020. Although it was not a sequel to ‘Hindi Medium,’ it had a different storyline. The film’s earnings were affected by the lockdown that followed shortly after its release, but Irrfan’s performance was well-received.
‘Kesari,’ a patriotic action film starring Akshay Kumar, premiered during Holi in 2019 and became a blockbuster, based on the Battle of Saragarhi.
The horror-drama ‘Pari,’ featuring Anushka Sharma, was released during Holi in 2018 and received mixed reviews, resulting in average performance.
The romantic comedy ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania,’ released in 2017 with Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, thrived during the Holi holidays, becoming a superhit.
Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah Bhatia’s ‘Himmatwala,’ released in 2013, failed to perform well at the box office, marking it as a flop.
The suspense-thriller ‘Kahaani,’ starring Vidya Balan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, was released during Holi in 2012 and was well-received, becoming a hit.
In 2008, the thriller ‘Race,’ directed by Abbas-Mustan and featuring Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu, Akshaye Khanna, and Katrina Kaif, also premiered during Holi and achieved success at the box office.
