Strong Earthquake Shakes Kolkata, Residents in Panic

Kolkata, February 27: A powerful earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Bangladesh, sending tremors throughout Kolkata and various regions of West Bengal on Friday. The quake was felt around 1:22 PM, causing alarm among residents.

According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers in Bangladesh, leading to significant shaking in Kolkata and surrounding districts.

Initial reports indicate that the tremors lasted for several seconds, prompting many people to evacuate offices and buildings in panic. The earthquake’s intensity in Kolkata was recorded at 5.0, with its epicenter located approximately 8 kilometers from the city.

A notable incident occurred when Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar was addressing a gathering in Kolkata. He too felt the tremors and was seen inquiring about the situation afterward. Cameras at the event also shook during the quake.

The districts most affected by the earthquake included South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, and West Midnapore.

A young woman from Howrah reported feeling strong tremors for a few seconds, stating that they later learned it was due to an earthquake. She expressed that such events are frightening for everyone.

Earlier, on February 3, a significant area of Kolkata experienced shaking after an earthquake at 9:05 PM, with tremors lasting about 15 seconds. Initially, the source of that quake was reported to be in Myanmar.
