Pre-monsoon activity continues across the state; Gwalior-Chambal brace for intense heat while thunderstorms are forecast in western and central MP
Bhopal, May 21: Madhya Pradesh is witnessing an unusual weather pattern this May, with simultaneous pre-monsoon showers and scorching heat sweeping across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm alert for 40 districts including Bhopal, Indore, and Ujjain, while a heatwave warning remains in place for parts of the Gwalior and Chambal divisions.
According to IMD officials, three cyclonic circulations and one trough are currently active over the region, contributing to unstable weather conditions. This mixed spell of rainfall and heat is expected to continue until at least May 24, keeping residents on alert for sudden changes in weather.
Heatwave Grips Northern MP, Storm Warnings Elsewhere
On Wednesday, a heatwave alert has been issued for eight districts in the Gwalior-Chambal and Sagar divisions. These include Gwalior, Sheopur, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Niwari, Tikamgarh, and Chhatarpur, where temperatures are expected to soar and conditions may become dangerously hot.
Simultaneously, an orange alert for severe thunderstorms has been declared in Narmadapuram, Betul, Harda, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Khargone, Barwani, Alirajpur, and Jhabua districts. Wind speeds in these areas may reach 50 to 60 km/h or even higher, potentially disrupting daily life and causing localized damage.
Other districts, including Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Rewa, Sidhi, Katni, and many more across eastern and central Madhya Pradesh, are also forecast to experience gusty winds and heavy rainfall.
Relentless Rainfall and Fluctuating Temperatures Across the State
May has seen consistent rainfall across the state, with no day passing without showers in some part of Madhya Pradesh. On Tuesday, storms hit 17 districts including Betul, Seoni, Chhindwara, and Anuppur.
While rain has provided some respite in places, intense heat remains a concern. Chhatarpur emerged as the hottest district on Tuesday, recording 45.5°C in Khajuraho and 45°C in Nowgong. Other high temperatures included 44.8°C in Tikamgarh, 44.5°C in Gwalior, and 43.5°C in Satna.
In major urban centers, temperatures were slightly more moderate but still warm — Bhopal recorded 39°C, Indore 34.6°C, Ujjain 36.5°C, and Jabalpur 40.8°C. Ratlam saw the lowest maximum temperature at 34.6°C.
Nautapa Begins May 25, Expected to Intensify Heat
Meteorologists have also warned that Nautapa — a period believed to be the year’s hottest phase — will begin on May 25 and last until June 2. Historically, this nine-day period brings severe heat, though this year’s recurring storms have kept temperatures somewhat in check. However, a rise in daytime temperatures is still anticipated as Nautapa progresses.
Stay Alert, Follow Weather Updates
Residents are advised to remain cautious, especially in districts under heatwave or storm alerts. The state government has urged people to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, secure loose objects around homes, and avoid unnecessary travel during storm conditions.
