Opposition Moves No-Confidence Motion Against Lok Sabha Speaker

New Delhi, February 9: Opposition MPs have decided to introduce a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. They accuse him of bias in parliamentary proceedings and suppressing the opposition’s voice. Congress leaders have reacted strongly, labeling this as a violation of parliamentary traditions and democratic processes.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated, “The Speaker has been disrespected. He is under pressure to make statements, which is unacceptable. There is no question of attacking the Prime Minister. The government has pressured him to say this because Prime Minister Modi lacked the courage to come to the House that day. Therefore, the Speaker is forced to clarify, which is wrong.”

Congress MP Sukdev Bhagat remarked, “The Lok Sabha Speaker holds a constitutional position, not one belonging to the ruling party. The way the opposition leader’s voice is being discriminated against is concerning. This is Parliament, not a censor board.” His comments highlighted the suppression of opposition voices, which he believes undermines democratic values.

Congress MP Ranjit Ranjan emphasized that this issue transcends both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, touching on the dignity and traditions of the House. He questioned, “Have you ever heard of a Prime Minister being afraid of women MPs in Parliament? Isn’t that shameful?” He called for the Speaker to clarify his stance, asserting that this is why the opposition feels compelled to bring forth a no-confidence motion.

Congress leader Sukjinder Singh Randhawa expressed similar concerns, stating, “The Speaker should work with all parties, but Om Birla has adopted the BJP party line, which he should not have done.” He believes the Speaker should adhere to parliamentary traditions.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari responded to the no-confidence motion, saying, “When it comes, we will inform you.”

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor remarked, “We came to discuss the budget, but it now seems that the government and the Speaker have no interest in parliamentary proceedings.”

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram also supported the opposition’s no-confidence motion, stating, “Parliament is meant for debate and process. The opposition should be given space to raise issues concerning the nation. This no-confidence motion is part of that.”
