Nina Gupta Reflects on Learning from Shyam Benegals Directing Style

Mumbai, February 4: Renowned Bollywood actress Nina Gupta is currently in the spotlight for her upcoming film “Vadh 2.” While busy promoting the film, she shared an intriguing story from her long career in an interview. This anecdote involved her experiences working with the esteemed filmmaker Shyam Benegal, during which she faced a reprimand on set.

When asked if acting without dialogue, relying solely on silence, is the greatest freedom for an artist, Gupta responded, “I don’t see it as freedom or a burden. For me, it’s part of the character and the work. How to perform a scene depends on the director’s vision, and the artist must trust that.”

She cited a scene from “Vadh 2,” where she walks down a corridor for an extended period. Initially, she questioned why she was shown walking for so long. However, she later realized that the director has a thought process behind every frame. “The audience may not grasp it immediately, but that scene profoundly impacts the story. I believe that sometimes a character can convey much without saying anything,” she explained.

Gupta then recounted an early career experience working with the legendary director Shyam Benegal. She noted, “Nowadays, many actors debate with directors, sometimes for valid reasons and sometimes not. But in the past, artists were more intimidated by their directors and accepted their decisions as final.”

She shared a moment when she suggested a different way to deliver a dialogue to Benegal. He firmly told her, “Go sit quietly and focus on your role.” Gupta views this experience as a significant lesson. “An actor only thinks about their role, but the director has the entire film in mind. They know where the story begins, where it ends, and the meaning of each scene. Therefore, the artist should trust the director’s vision and work accordingly.”

“Vadh 2” is set to release in theaters on February 6.
