New Delhi, February 5: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed serious concern over alleged sexual abuse cases targeting women, girls, and adolescents by trainers in gyms and fitness clubs across the country. NHRC member Priyank Kanungo has taken a firm stance on this issue.
Kanungo described the situation as a significant problem from social, moral, and legal perspectives. He noted that not only is sexual abuse a concern, but health-related risks are also on the rise in these establishments. He revealed that notices have been sent to all state governments, the Ministry of Sports, and the Sports Authority, requesting information about the existing regulations and guidelines related to the establishment and operation of gyms and fitness centers.
On the social media platform X, Kanungo wrote, “Numerous cases of sexual abuse targeting women/girls/adolescents by trainers in gyms and fitness clubs have come to light in various parts of the country. Additionally, from a health perspective, substandard food supplements and uncontrolled physical activities pose threats to human life.”
He further stated, “Therefore, notices have been sent to all state governments, the Ministry of Sports, and the Sports Authority to gather information on the rules and guidelines for establishing and operating gyms and fitness centers. This is to take action towards controlling unethical activities in this sector.”
Previously, the NHRC had taken cognizance of serious allegations of exploitation and forced conversions of young women under the guise of gyms and fitness centers in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. The commission viewed this as a prima facie violation of human rights and sought reports from the relevant authorities. The complaint alleged that an organized gang was targeting young women through gyms and fitness centers in Mirzapur.
