Nationwide Farmer March Begins in Kanyakumari for Legal Protections

Chennai, February 7: A nationwide farmer march commenced on Saturday from Kanyakumari, advocating for robust legal and economic protections for farmers. Agricultural leaders and representatives from various states have embarked on a long journey to Kashmir, urging the central government to implement immediate reforms, including a legally guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) for agricultural products.

This march is organized under the leadership of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the national coordinator of the United Farmers Front (a non-political entity).

Farmers’ representatives from Tamil Nadu and delegations from across India gathered at the southern tip of the country to launch this campaign, aimed at highlighting the worsening agricultural crisis they face.

Participants include P.R. Pandian, president of the Tamil Nadu All Farmers Association Coordination Committee, A. Vince Anto from the Kodayar Irrigation Committee, along with numerous other farmer leaders and activists.

Before the launch, Pandian addressed the media, criticizing the central government for failing to meet the long-standing demands of the farming community. He stated that the government has refused to implement a national agricultural loan waiver and has not ensured a profitable price for agricultural products. As a result, many farmers are grappling with rising debts and crises, leading to a serious concern over suicides in several regions.

The marchers are demanding the implementation of a nationwide MSP law to guarantee fair prices for crops, along with the recommendations made by the M.S. Swaminathan Committee, which proposed measures to improve farmers’ income and stability.

They are also calling for the repeal of the Electricity Regulatory Commission Act, arguing that it jeopardizes free electricity supply for farmers, and are demanding a complete waiver of agricultural loans.

The foot march will traverse several states, with participation from farmer organizations along the route. It is set to conclude on March 19 at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi, where millions of farmers are expected to gather for a massive rally.

Organizers have stated that representatives from all states will continue their journey to Kashmir to demonstrate national unity.

The delegation has also requested a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, hoping to present their charter of demands on February 9.
