Mumbai, February 4: The date for electing a new mayor in Mumbai has been set. However, it remains uncertain whether the mayor will be from the BJP or Shiv Sena. Voting for the mayoral position will take place on February 11 at 12 PM in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
This time, the position is reserved for a woman from the general category, meaning Mumbai is poised to welcome its first female mayor.
Nominations will be filed on February 7, the same day the election process for the deputy mayor will also be completed. The election will be overseen by BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani. Officials indicate that the names of committee members may also be announced in the next meeting.
It is noteworthy that voting for the Mumbai municipal elections occurred on January 15, with the counting of votes concluding on January 16. In this election, the BJP emerged as the largest party, winning 89 seats, while its ally Shiv Sena secured 29 seats.
Meanwhile, the Uddhav faction of Shiv Sena won 65 seats, and Raj Thackeray’s MNS managed to secure only 6 seats.
The majority mark for the mayoral election stands at 114 seats, which both Shiv Sena and BJP have collectively surpassed. Therefore, both parties could collaborate to elect their candidate as mayor. However, it is still unclear whether the mayoral seat will go to the BJP or the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena.
Residents of the city are now eagerly awaiting February 11, when it will be decided which female councilor will take charge and who will become the new mayor of Mumbai.
