Imphal, February 15: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced on Saturday the government’s commitment to establish a world-class polo ground in Lamfelpat, Imphal West district.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the second Dr. Kh. Chaurjit Singh Inter-District Polo Tournament 2026 held at Mapal Kangjeibung, the Chief Minister emphasized the historical significance of polo in Manipur.

He stated, “The state government is committed to developing a world-class polo ground on the designated 32 acres of land in Lamfelpat.” He assured that he would visit the proposed site for inspection on Sunday, accompanied by relevant officials and members of the MHRPA, to discuss development plans for the polo ground.

The tournament’s final match commenced with the Chief Minister throwing the polo ball. A total of 10 teams participated, with the final match played between the Ex Polo Club and the Chingkhehunba Polo Club.

The closing ceremony was attended by family members of Dr. Kh. Chaurjit Singh, MHRPA President H. Dilip Singh, Technical Chairman N. Bedjit Singh, Kh. Laksahab Singh, students, and other attendees.

Later, the Chief Minister participated in a program at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy to commemorate the 31st martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Madhumangal, where he paid his respects. Previously, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla remarked that the state is the birthplace of the true and vibrant form of modern polo, Sagol Kangjei, highlighting the sport’s integral role in Manipur’s cultural heritage and identity.
