Chandigarh, February 8: In a significant achievement under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s directives to enhance safety in Punjab, the Amritsar Rural Police have apprehended the main suspect in the Lucky Oberoi murder case following a shooting incident in the Khalsa area. A .30 caliber Beretta pistol was recovered from the suspect, identified as Shaminder Singh, a resident of Meethapur in Jalandhar.
Shaminder was riding an Activa scooter and has a prior criminal record. Reports indicate that on Friday morning, while returning from paying respects at the Gurudwara Singh Sabha parking in Model Town, Jalandhar, Satwinderpal Singh, also known as Lucky Oberoi, was shot dead by unidentified assailants riding a white Activa.
DIG Sandeep Goyal stated that coordinated efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects commenced immediately after the incident.
Based on reliable intelligence, it was revealed that one of the suspects, Shaminder Singh, was attempting to evade arrest and was hiding in the Khalsa area. Acting on this information, the Amritsar Rural Police set up checkpoints and intensified their search in surrounding areas.
Further details from Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Suhail Qasim Mir indicated that during the operation, the suspect was spotted arriving on a motorcycle. When police signaled him to stop, he panicked and attempted to turn back, losing control and falling.
In an attempt to flee, the suspect fired at the police team. The police returned fire in self-defense, injuring the suspect. He was subsequently arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment.
During initial questioning, the suspect made significant revelations regarding the involvement of another individual in Lucky Oberoi’s murder. Based on these disclosures, further raids and actions are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.
