
New Delhi, February 5: Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy met with Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav on Wednesday to discuss long-term solutions for the escalating human-wildlife conflict in Karnataka. The meeting aimed to ensure citizen safety and livelihoods through a high-level dialogue.
An official statement from Kumaraswamy’s office revealed that the meeting took place at Bhupender Yadav’s office in Parliament House. During the discussions, Kumaraswamy expressed serious concern over the increasing incidents of elephant attacks in several districts of Karnataka, including Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, and Shivamogga.
He highlighted that the continuous encroachment by wildlife has resulted in loss of life and property, particularly affecting farmers and livestock herders living near forest areas. Many individuals have sustained severe injuries, leading to permanent disabilities.
Kumaraswamy emphasized the urgent need for a sustainable and long-term policy response, stating that the situation in Karnataka has reached a critical point.
In response, Bhupender Yadav assured that these concerns would be addressed promptly and prioritized. He requested detailed information from Kumaraswamy and instructed officials to prepare and implement appropriate remedial measures.
The Union Minister for Forests directed relevant authorities to present a comprehensive report on this issue before the conclusion of the ongoing budget session in Parliament, reaffirming the government’s commitment to swift action.
During the meeting, both ministers engaged in extensive discussions on matters related to their respective ministries. The primary goal of the dialogue was to strengthen inter-departmental coordination, accelerate key development initiatives, and enhance institutional collaboration.
The statement also noted that they reviewed the development trajectory of the steel sector and acknowledged the constructive support provided by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in promoting sustainable industrial development.
Meanwhile, Kumaraswamy mentioned on social media that he also met with Minister of Railways, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss key issues related to development and governance. They held detailed discussions on the Bengaluru-Pune high-speed rail corridor, the proposed new Bengaluru-Mumbai connection, and the implementation of railway fencing and block corridors to prevent animal accidents.
Kumaraswamy further stated that he reviewed all pending railway projects related to Mandya and requested an additional stop for the Wodeyar Express in Ramanagara. He also emphasized the need for improved Aadhaar services and infrastructure in Mandya district to ensure timely access for citizens.
Kumaraswamy concluded by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening infrastructure, connectivity, and public service delivery. It is noteworthy that he represents the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency.
