Iran Requests Talks with the U.S. to Be Held in Oman, Not Turkey

New Delhi, February 4: Iran has insisted that negotiations with the United States this week take place in Oman rather than Turkey. Additionally, Iran has requested that the scope of the meeting be limited to bilateral discussions solely focused on nuclear issues.

This shift in venue and agenda comes amid heightened tensions following the U.S. military’s increased presence in the Middle East. The U.S. military reported that on Tuesday, it shot down an Iranian drone that approached aggressively near the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea.

According to U.S. media, Captain Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command, stated that the drone was downed as it rapidly approached the carrier, which was approximately 500 miles from Iran’s southern coast.

Hawkins noted, “Despite the de-escalatory measures taken by the U.S. military operating in international waters, the Iranian drone continued to fly toward the ship. An F-35C fighter jet from the Lincoln shot down the drone to ensure the safety of the carrier and its personnel.”

He added, “No American service members were harmed during this incident, and there was no damage to any U.S. equipment.”

U.S. media also reported, citing the Tasnim News Agency, that contact with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) drone was lost while it was conducting a surveillance mission over international waters in the Arabian Sea.

An informed Iranian source indicated that the drone successfully transmitted its surveillance footage to IRGC operators before losing contact. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the disconnection, with details to be provided once confirmed.
