Mumbai, February 7: The Indian Coast Guard has successfully dismantled an international Oil Smuggling syndicate through a daring maritime operation. On Friday, a coordinated sea-air operation led to the interception of three suspicious vessels, revealing a large-scale illegal oil trade.
According to information shared by the Coast Guard, this syndicate was involved in transporting cheap oil and oil-based cargo from conflict-ridden countries to international waters, where it was sold via mid-sea transfers to motor tankers. This illicit trade allowed smugglers to reap substantial profits while evading fees and taxes owed to coastal nations, including India.
The Coast Guard’s advanced surveillance systems detected suspicious activities of a motor tanker within the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Following this, digital investigations and data pattern analysis identified two additional vessels that were likely involved in illegal oil transfers at sea.
On February 5, approximately 100 nautical miles west of Mumbai, Coast Guard vessels intercepted all three suspicious ships. An expert boarding team conducted thorough inspections, checked onboard electronic data, verified documents, and interrogated the crew. The investigation revealed the full extent of the smuggling operation and the methodology employed by the criminals.
Initial findings suggest that these vessels frequently altered their identities and details to evade Law Enforcement agencies. The owners of the ships are believed to be based abroad, with the smuggling network spanning multiple countries, coordinating the entire operation from various locations.
The Coast Guard is preparing to bring these vessels to Mumbai for further investigation. They will then be handed over to Indian customs and other law enforcement agencies for legal action.
The Indian Coast Guard stated that this operation is a result of enhanced digital surveillance and operational capabilities at sea. This action once again demonstrates India’s responsible and capable role in ensuring Maritime Security and enforcing an international rules-based order.
