India-U.S. Trade Agreement Boosts Textile and Apparel Sector

New Delhi, February 7: The interim framework of the India-U.S. trade agreement is a significant boost for the country’s textile and apparel sector, industry insiders reported on Saturday.

Dr. A. Shaktivel, Chairman of the apparel export promotion Council (AEPC), welcomed the joint statement on the trade agreement from both nations on behalf of the entire textile and apparel industry.

He stated, “The coming decade is set to be India’s decade in textile trade, as the country emerges as one of the most preferred sourcing destinations for global buyers.”

According to Shaktivel, “The India-U.S. trade agreement creates immense opportunities across the entire textile value chain, particularly generating substantial employment for women and small and medium enterprises. It will also greatly benefit farmers in rural India, promoting inclusive and sustainable development.”

He further noted, “Reduced tariffs will enhance the competitiveness of the country’s textile sector while helping India become a reliable sourcing hub in textiles.”

The agreement is expected to help eliminate non-tariff barriers and reduce compliance burdens, facilitating quicker access for Indian goods to the U.S. market.

The AEPC Chairman emphasized, “The coming decade will be a golden era for the Indian textile and apparel sector.”

Previously, the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) praised the trade agreement between India and the U.S.

Beyond textiles, this trade agreement is anticipated to benefit India’s engineering goods, chemicals, leather, gems and jewelry, and agricultural sectors.

FIEO President S.C. Ralhan remarked that this agreement will enhance the competitiveness of Indian products in the U.S. market and provide strong momentum for export growth across all sectors. Lower tariffs will not only improve price competitiveness but also help Indian exporters integrate more deeply into U.S. supply chains.
