India Opens Market to U.S. Products Under New Trade Agreement

Washington, February 7: Under President Donald Trump’s trade policy, India is opening its vast market to American products. U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer announced that India is reducing tariffs on American industrial and agricultural goods, benefiting U.S. companies and farmers.

This announcement came on Friday as the White House revealed a framework for an interim trade agreement between the U.S. and India. The goal of this agreement is to promote trade based on equality and mutual benefit between the two nations.

Greer stated, “President Trump’s initiative is making one of the world’s largest economies, India, more accessible to American workers and producers. This will lower tariffs on all U.S. industrial products and many agricultural goods. Today’s announcement reflects the deepening ties between the U.S. and India, as we create new opportunities for farmers and businessmen in both countries.”

Greer praised India’s Ministry of Commerce, particularly Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, for their role in advancing discussions toward fair and balanced trade.

The framework also indicates that both countries will continue negotiations for a comprehensive U.S.-India bilateral trade agreement in the future. These discussions began on February 13, 2025, between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The interim agreement aims to deliver quick and tangible results while strengthening supply chains.

Under this framework, India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods. It will also lower duties on a wide range of American food products and agricultural items. Meanwhile, the U.S. plans to impose a reciprocal tariff rate of 18% on Indian goods through an executive order, targeting textiles, leather and footwear, plastics and rubber, organic chemicals, home decor items, handicrafts, and certain machinery.

If the interim agreement is fully implemented, the U.S. may remove tariffs on certain Indian products, such as affordable medicines, gems and diamonds, and aircraft parts. Both countries have expressed their commitment to work towards the swift implementation of this framework, aiming for a comprehensive and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement in the future.
