India Launches Beta Version of e-Statistics Portal for Enhanced Data Access

New Delhi, February 6: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has launched the beta version of its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the e-Statistics Portal, under the National Statistical Office (NSO). This TECHNOLOGY allows users to connect directly to datasets through their AI tools and applications.

The ministry stated that this initiative is part of NSO’s ongoing efforts to make official statistics more accessible to citizens, researchers, and businesses. The beta version currently includes seven data products, such as the Periodic Labour Force Survey, Consumer Price Index, Annual Survey of Industries, Index of Industrial Production, National Accounts Statistics, Wholesale Price Index, and Environmental Statistics. More datasets will be added in the coming months.

The MCP server enables users to query datasets directly without downloading large files, integrate official statistics into their analytical tools, automate reports using existing statistics, and access multiple datasets through a single connection. This means less time spent on data access and more time for actual analysis and decision-making.

Furthermore, the ministry indicated that the MCP server is a step towards building essential data infrastructure for a developed India. The initiative aims to strengthen data-driven policy-making at all levels of government and empower citizens by providing better information for participation in development.

This launch precedes the AI Impact Summit scheduled for February 15-20, 2026, showcasing NSO India’s commitment to leveraging emerging technologies like AI to create a real impact in the data ecosystem. It aligns with the objectives of Working Group 6 on Democratizing AI, chaired by MoSPI Secretary Dr. Saurabh Garg. The introduction of the MCP server demonstrates a commitment to making official statistics accessible and technology-agnostic. By removing barriers between users and official data, the MCP server will help data users complete their tasks more efficiently, enable businesses to make informed decisions, and allow policymakers immediate access to the numbers they need. Government data will now seamlessly integrate into the AI tools that users already employ.

The ministry noted that the current release includes seven datasets covering economic and social indicators. Additional products from the e-Statistics Portal will be gradually added based on user feedback and technical readiness. Users can access the MCP server through the ministry’s website, where technical documentation and support are available online.
