Gandhinagar, February 5: The Gujarat government announced on Wednesday that it will commence its annual water conservation initiative, the Sujalam Sufalam Water Campaign, starting February 21, earlier than in previous years.
This decision aims to accelerate water collection efforts before the monsoon and strengthen preparations for the state’s rainy season.
The announcement was made following a state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar.
Speaking to the media, state government spokesperson and minister Jitu Vaghani stated that to expedite water conservation efforts before the monsoon, the Chief Minister has directed that the Sujalam Sufalam Water Campaign begin in February. The campaign will be launched across the state on February 21.
This initiative is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to enhance water availability through coordinated actions across various departments over the past eight years.
Under the Chief Minister’s guidance, the state government has been running this campaign annually. It aligns with the comprehensive national initiatives launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to improve water conservation and storage.
A key objective of this year’s campaign is to deepen lakes as quickly as possible to ensure water storage ahead of the anticipated monsoon.
The timing of the campaign has been set with the Holi festival (March 3) in mind, as many laborers travel to their native places during this period.
Minister Vaghani further noted that starting the campaign early will help avoid delays in completing development projects.
Over the past eight years, the Sujalam Sufalam Water Campaign has made a significant impact.
Between 2018 and 2025, the campaign has facilitated the storage of approximately 13,994 million cubic feet of water across Gujarat.
Additionally, it has provided employment opportunities for project workers, generating over 26 million man-days of work, thereby supporting livelihoods and community water security.
By initiating this year’s campaign ahead of schedule, the state government aims to ensure adequate water supply for both rural and urban areas before the onset of the monsoon, while further strengthening water storage infrastructure.
