Bhopal, March 5: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the police and health department following the tragic suicide of a female doctor at AIIMS in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This information was shared by NHRC member Priyank Kanungo.
Kanungo revealed on the social media platform ‘X’ that the assistant professor, Srishti, took her own life due to alleged harassment and humiliation by the Head of Department, Dr. Parvez. Reports indicate that she overdosed on medication to end her suffering.
According to the complaint, despite the doctor having reported the harassment by Dr. Parvez three times, the hospital management failed to take action and attempted to suppress the matter. Ultimately, this led to the tragic decision by the female doctor to end her life.
Kanungo emphasized the seriousness of the complaint and confirmed that notices have been sent to the Bhopal police, AIIMS Bhopal management, and the Ministry of Health for an investigation. All parties have been instructed to submit a report on their findings.
In his post, Kanungo expressed condolences to the victim’s family, stating, “The suicide of a promising doctor is deeply saddening. We will ensure that the guilty are punished and that improvements are made within the system.”
This incident is not isolated; another female doctor at AIIMS Bhopal previously committed suicide. Assistant Professor Dr. Rashmi Verma was found unconscious in her hostel room on December 11. Reports suggest she had overdosed on anesthetic injections. Despite being admitted to the hospital that night, she succumbed to her injuries 25 days later.
A suicide note was recovered at the scene, in which Dr. Verma took responsibility for her death.
