New Delhi, February 4: On the occasion of World Cancer Day, Delhi’s Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh inaugurated the Delhi State Cancer Institute’s (DSCI) initiative, the Cancer Awareness, Prevention, and Screening Program (CAPS). This program aims to strengthen early detection, prevention, and access to cancer care services in the capital. Senior officials from the health department, doctors, nurses, technicians, and healthcare staff were also present at the event.
During his address, Minister Singh emphasized the importance of timely screening and awareness to control the rising incidence of cancer. He noted that due to better healthcare facilities in Delhi, a significant number of patients from neighboring states seek treatment here, leading to higher reported cases. Delayed testing, however, increases cancer risks.
Under the CAPS initiative, the government is adopting a community-based approach. Efforts are underway to make cancer screening more accessible and regular, especially for women. Mobile cancer screening vans equipped with mammography and HPV DNA testing will be deployed at key locations and remote areas of the capital, allowing citizens to undergo screenings without disrupting their daily schedules.
Additionally, a self-testing kit was launched for convenient and private screening. This kit enables women to collect vaginal swab samples and securely store them in labeled vials for HPV DNA testing using RT-PCR technology. Test results will be shared within a week, followed by medical advice and necessary treatment if required. Mammography results will be analyzed immediately, ensuring follow-up care for women needing treatment.
The initiative will also promote cancer awareness, early detection methods, anti-tobacco campaigns, and cervical cancer vaccination to reduce future risks.
Minister Singh stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the government is implementing a comprehensive strategy focused on prevention, early detection, and prompt treatment. Regular screening camps, robust infrastructure, and advanced diagnostic capabilities are being established, particularly focusing on breast, cervical, and oral cancers.
He reiterated that cancer prevention is a key vision of the Prime Minister, and the Chief Minister is taking this issue very seriously. The current focus is on raising cancer awareness, as many patients arrive for testing too late, complicating treatment. Alongside awareness, the government is strengthening comprehensive screening to ensure early detection and quality treatment. Plans are underway to launch cervical cancer vaccinations and testing facilities through mobile cancer vans. The goal is to prevent illness wherever possible and provide timely, quality care to every citizen.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to public health, Minister Singh stated that the Delhi government is taking significant steps to enhance cancer care services and provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare to all citizens of the capital.
