Delhi Assembly Orders Investigation into Punjab Police Actions

New Delhi, February 5: The Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, has directed the Privileges Committee to conduct a detailed investigation into the actions of the Punjab Police related to the Atishi Video Controversy. Gupta stated that there appears to be a prima facie case of privilege violation and contempt of the House.

This decision follows a complaint filed by Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra. Gupta noted that the Privileges Committee will examine the roles of the Punjab Director General of Police and the Jalandhar Police Commissioner.

The controversy stems from an FIR filed by the Punjab Police concerning allegations of edited or tampered video clips of statements made by Atishi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, on January 6, 2026.

After reviewing the response from the Punjab Police and Mishra’s complaint, Gupta concluded that the issue is directly related to the proceedings of the House, falling within the scope of Legislative Privilege.

A press release indicated that despite the Assembly Secretariat informing the Punjab Police that the Speaker and the House had taken cognizance of the matter, an FIR was lodged, and public statements were made alleging tampering with the Assembly’s proceedings.

Gupta dismissed the written explanations provided by the DGP of Punjab and the Jalandhar Police Commissioner as unsatisfactory. They claimed that the Punjab Police acted in accordance with the law and that the alleged acts were committed by individuals outside the Delhi Assembly.

The press release further stated that despite repeated reminders, the Punjab Police failed to provide essential documents to the Delhi Assembly Secretariat. These documents include the complaint, the FIR, a report from the Punjab Police’s social media expert, and copies of the forensic report from the Punjab Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).

Additionally, correspondence with the director of the Punjab FSL revealed that the forensic report was only shared with the relevant police officials.
