New Delhi, February 9: The political landscape has intensified following remarks by Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), regarding the proposal to award the Bharat Ratna to Veer Savarkar. Leaders from opposition parties have reacted strongly, labeling the proposal as controversial.
CPI(M) MP John Brittas responded to Bhagwat’s statement, asserting that awarding Savarkar the Bharat Ratna would mark a regrettable chapter in India’s history. He emphasized that Savarkar is known not for his contributions to the freedom struggle but for seeking forgiveness from the British. Brittas described him as a figure associated with hatred, divisive Politics, and polarization. He warned that granting the highest civilian honor to Savarkar would signify a tragic day for the nation.
Samajwadi Party MP Rajiv Rai also expressed sharp criticism on the matter. He argued that if the tradition of awarding the Bharat Ratna to those who seek forgiveness begins, it would necessitate honoring all such individuals. Rai questioned whether we want to teach our children that in times of conflict, one should seek forgiveness from oppressive forces. He believes that the citizens of the country will not accept such a mindset.
Additionally, Rai commented on statements made by AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi regarding Uttar Pradesh. In response to Owaisi’s remark, “Yogi ji, I am coming,” Rai suggested that Owaisi should instead say, “Yogi ji, I am being sent; please take care of me.”
Rai also addressed comments made by the Uttar Pradesh president of Owaisi’s party regarding a “burqa-wearing woman becoming Chief Minister.” He stated that the focus should first be on becoming an MLA before discussing aspirations for the Chief Minister position.
