Chinas First 20-Megawatt Offshore Wind Turbine Commissioned

Beijing, February 7: The China Three Gorges Group has successfully commissioned the world’s first 20-megawatt offshore wind turbine generator set in the maritime region of Fujian Province, southern China. This marks a significant achievement as it is the first time China has installed and connected such a high-capacity wind turbine to the grid. This milestone showcases China’s advancements in research, development, manufacturing, offshore construction, and operational capabilities for ultra-high-capacity wind turbine generator sets.

The 20-megawatt offshore wind turbine is located over 30 kilometers from the coast in waters deeper than 40 meters. Its center reaches a height of 174 meters, equivalent to a 58-story building. The diameter of the impeller is 300 meters, and its sweep area is comparable to ten standard football fields.

Under designated operational conditions, this wind turbine generates over 80 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This output can meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 44,000 households and is sufficient to replace about 22,000 tons of standard coal.

The turbine utilizes independently developed airfoil blades from China. Through a lightweight design and digital intelligent integration, the weight per megawatt has been reduced by more than 20% compared to industry averages.

Significant improvements have been made in both wind energy collection and electricity production efficiency, providing technical and equipment support for the expansion of China’s offshore wind energy projects in deeper waters.
