CBI Arrests Two Military Engineers in Pune for Bribery

Pune, February 6: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two officers from the Military Engineering Service (MES) in Khadki, Pune, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of two lakh rupees from a complainant. This information was confirmed by an official on Friday.

The CBI stated that Assistant Garrison Engineer (E/M-II) Sunil Nikam and Junior Engineer (E/M-II) Suresh Mhaskey were apprehended on Thursday.

During searches of the accused’s residential and office premises, the agency recovered documents and 1.88 lakh rupees in undisclosed cash.

The CBI had registered a case against the officers on February 3, alleging that they sought an undue benefit of six lakh rupees.

The complainant holds a power of attorney for a private company and is executing MES contracts.

According to the complaint, despite completing the work and submitting the completion certificate, the payment was reportedly withheld in exchange for the bribe.

After negotiations, the accused officials agreed to accept two lakh rupees as the first installment of the undue benefit.

On Thursday, the CBI caught the junior engineer red-handed while accepting the bribe from the complainant, with the money recovered from his office.

The CBI also stated that the Assistant Garrison Engineer was arrested for his involvement in the conspiracy.

In a separate case, the CBI arrested declared absconder Renu Saxena from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, in connection with a bank fraud case.

The agency had filed a case on March 30, 2012, against the then branch manager of Punjab and Sind Bank, D.P. Singh, who, along with 46 others, was accused of approving and distributing 24 housing loans and two property loans based on fake and fabricated identity and income certificates, amounting to approximately 3.63 crore rupees. Saxena was among the accused in this case.
