Bhadohi, February 8: The Bhadohi carpet industry in Uttar Pradesh is experiencing a wave of enthusiasm following the reduction of tariffs on Indian products by the United States. Local exporters have congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Giriraj Singh for this diplomatic success.
They believe that the balanced policy and dialogue initiated by Prime Minister Modi have led the US administration to lower tariffs to 18%, with the possibility of eliminating them in certain sectors. This development has provided significant support to the carpet industry, with expectations of a BUSINESS increase of nearly 20%.
Aslam Mahboob, Vice President of the Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) and a senior carpet exporter, shared that the reduction in tariffs has created a positive atmosphere in the industry. He noted that the trade agreement process with the European Union was already strengthening business, and the recent US decision has accelerated this effect.
According to him, the US market alone is linked to approximately ₹17,640 crore in business, but the previous increase in tariffs had caused a 14% decline in exports. Now, interest from foreign buyers is on the rise again. He mentioned that direct exports from Bhadohi amount to around ₹4,500 crore, and when combined with carpet production from Delhi, Panipat, Haryana, and other states, this figure reaches nearly ₹9,000 crore.
Exporters believe that the relief in tariffs will not only increase orders but also provide permanent employment for weavers. They expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and his team for this achievement, stating that it will open new opportunities for the Indian carpet industry.
