Guwahati, February 4: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government for increasing the state’s central allocation in this year’s budget. He stated that this move reflects New Delhi’s confidence in Assam’s development trajectory.
In his statement, the Chief Minister noted that the central government has consistently prioritized Assam’s progress and rewarded the state’s positive economic momentum. He highlighted that Assam has received ₹49,725 crore in central allocation this year, which will significantly support the state’s ambitious development plans.
Sarma wrote, “The central government has continuously prioritized development in Assam, and by increasing the share of central transfers in the developed India budget, it has rewarded Assam’s positive growth momentum. I thank PM Narendra Modi for allocating ₹49,725 crore to support our developmental aspirations.”
State government officials indicated that this increased funding will strengthen Assam’s financial capacity, allowing for greater investment in infrastructure, education, health, connectivity, and social welfare programs. Additionally, the state will gain more flexibility in implementing region-specific development programs.
The Chief Minister stated that Assam’s improved financial position is a result of reforms, better administration, and focused development initiatives over the past few years. According to officials from the state’s finance department, Assam has consistently increased its tax and non-tax revenues and has made better use of the funds provided by the central government.
Sarma also mentioned that the central support has been crucial in accelerating major infrastructure projects, including highways, bridges, railways, inland waterways, and urban development plans. He emphasized that these investments will better connect Assam with national and regional markets, boost employment, and attract private investment.
Political experts believe that this central allocation comes at a time when Assam is being positioned as a key development engine in the Northeast. The state government is focusing on making Assam the gateway to Southeast Asia, particularly in logistics, tourism, manufacturing, and the energy sector.
With this latest allocation, the Assam government can further enhance its development programs, aligning them with the central government’s vision of inclusive and balanced regional development. Officials assert that this step will pave the way for financial strength and new avenues of growth for Assam.
