Guwahati, February 8: A special investigation team (SIT) in Assam has revealed startling findings regarding Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, in connection with alleged Pakistani contacts. The SIT has identified Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh as a key handler in this case. Sheikh is reportedly an advisor to Pakistan’s Planning Commission.
According to the SIT, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh is a close associate of Elizabeth Gogoi and was the founder of an NGO named “Lead Pakistan.” This organization is where Elizabeth Gogoi previously worked. The investigation also uncovered that Sheikh has been actively commenting on India’s internal affairs, Parliament, and political issues on social media.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed serious concerns on Sunday regarding Sheikh’s online activities, suggesting they pose a threat to India’s interests. Sheikh has repeatedly voiced opinions on topics related to India’s domestic Politics and security.
The SIT report indicates that Sheikh expanded his network within India through international forums and think tanks focused on climate change. The investigation suggests that Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi were part of the CDKN Climate Network, which is linked to India-Pakistan relations. Assam officials allege that Sheikh used these networks to recruit like-minded individuals and influence policy discussions in India.
An official statement from the SIT warned that Ali Tauqeer Sheikh’s “anti-India agenda” has received support from certain factions within Assam and other parts of the country.
Chief Minister Sarma noted that this represents a new method of anti-national activities, distinct from traditional espionage, utilizing NGOs and international policy networks. He clarified that the involvement of a sitting MP elevates this case beyond a routine investigation. He stated that it has now become a matter of national security, prompting a request for the investigation to be handed over to the central government and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
