Assam Political Tensions Rise Amid Serious Allegations

New Delhi, February 8: The political landscape in Assam is heating up as accusations fly between leaders. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma leveled serious allegations against Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi during a press conference on Sunday. In response, Gogoi sharply criticized the event, dubbing it the “most failed press conference of the century.”

Following the Chief Minister’s claims, Gogoi took to social media platform X to express his disdain for the press conference. He remarked that he felt pity for journalists in Delhi and Assam who had to endure what he described as a disastrous event.

During the press conference, CM Sarma stated that the allegations involving Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi, Gaurav Gogoi‘s wife and the Deputy Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, are of a serious nature and should not be dismissed lightly. The involvement of a sitting MP elevates the issue beyond a routine investigation.

Sarma emphasized the gravity of the allegations, asserting that when a current MP, who also serves as the Deputy Leader of the Congress Party in Parliament, is linked to Pakistan, the matter becomes significantly more important.

In his rebuttal, Gogoi stated, “I feel sorry for the journalists in Delhi and Assam who had to endure the most failed press conference of the century. It was worse than a C-grade movie. The so-called politically savvy Chief Minister raised the most foolish and fabricated issues. This super flop is in stark contrast to our successful Jomoy Parivartan Yatra, which revealed the 12,000 bighas of land occupied by the Chief Minister and his family members.”

CM Sarma further explained that the matter was initially investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Assam Police. Based on the SIT’s findings, a formal case was registered at the CID police station for further investigation. According to the Chief Minister, the SIT submitted its report to the state government, which subsequently presented the matter to the Assam Cabinet. After deliberation, the Cabinet concluded that a central agency’s investigation was necessary due to the scope, sensitivity, and broader implications of the allegations.
