Assam Congress Leader Challenges Chief Ministers Press Conference Claims

Guwahati, February 8: Assam Congress President and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has responded to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma‘s allegations. He labeled Sarma’s press conference as a “super flop,” asserting that no one in Assam is taking his statements seriously.

Gogoi took to social media platform X, stating, “Himanta Biswa Sarma embarrassed himself in front of local and national media. Even after a two-and-a-half-hour press conference, the journalists present were not satisfied. No one in Assam is taking his words seriously.”

He further challenged Sarma, saying, “He should explain how he and his family acquired 12,000 bighas, or 4,000 acres, of valuable land across Assam. When we come to power, we will distribute that land to the poor and landless.”

In another post, Gogoi expressed sympathy for journalists in Delhi and Assam who had to endure what he described as the “flop press conference of the century.” He compared it to a C-grade movie, stating, “The so-called politically savvy Chief Minister raised the most ridiculous issues. This super flop is in stark contrast to our successful revelation of the 12,000 bighas of land seized by the Chief Minister and his family.”

Earlier, Chief Minister Sarma had claimed that the allegations involving Pakistani citizen Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi, Gaurav Gogoi‘s wife, are of a serious nature and should not be dismissed lightly. He emphasized that the involvement of a sitting MP elevates the issue beyond a routine investigation.

Sarma explained that an initial inquiry was conducted by the SIT, which submitted its report to the state government. Based on this, the CID police registered a formal case for further investigation. According to the Chief Minister, the SIT’s report was presented to the Assam Cabinet, which discussed the matter in detail and concluded that due to the seriousness, sensitivity, and far-reaching implications of the allegations, a central agency investigation is necessary.

He also clarified that the Assam government will formally send the case to the Ministry of Home Affairs, and it will be handed over to the central government only after receiving consent from the ministry.
